Bank account fee barometer for Belgium

Updated on
In short

This barometer records the annual account-holding fees advertised by banks active in Belgium. It covers the recurring charge for holding a current account, which is the figure customers compare most and the one banks change most quietly. Cards, transactions and services outside the euro area are billed separately.

Our verdict

The account fee is the smallest part of what a Belgian account costs you. Compare it, then look at card charges, cash withdrawal conditions and non-euro transaction pricing, which is where the real difference between two banks usually sits.

Method

We collect the advertised annual account-holding fee from the public tariff documents of banks active in Belgium. Every survey is dated and the date appears beneath the table.

We record the standing tariff for an ordinary current account held by an adult resident, outside welcome offers and outside conditional reductions granted for salary domiciliation or for holding other products.

We publish no ranking. The table is sorted by ascending fee, which is a factual ordering, and a low fee is not by itself evidence that an account suits you.

No bank can influence the survey or appear in it against payment. Anyone can reproduce it from the same published tariff documents.

What the account fee does not cover

Debit and credit cards are usually charged separately, and a bank with a low account fee can price its cards higher. Read the two lines together rather than one of them.

Withdrawals, paper statements and counter operations are frequently billed per item. For a customer who rarely uses branches this is irrelevant; for someone who does, it can outweigh the whole annual fee.

Payments and card use outside the euro area carry their own charges and exchange margins. This is the line that matters most to internationally mobile households, and it is also the least visible in a headline comparison.

Some Belgian products remain effectively bank-specific, notably the blocked rental guarantee account required for a main-residence lease. An account without that service is not comparable with one that offers it, whatever the fee.

Reusing the data

The figures are published under an open licence and may be quoted or reused, including commercially, provided Switchr.be is cited as the source and the survey date is stated.

The series is kept year on year and can be provided in a structured format on request, which allows the evolution of Belgian account pricing to be tracked over time rather than at a single date.

Frequently asked questions

Is the cheapest account the best one?

Not necessarily. The annual holding fee is only one line: card charges, withdrawal conditions and non-euro transaction pricing often matter more, and an account without a blocked rental guarantee service may not meet a tenant's needs at all.

Are welcome offers included in this survey?

No. We record the standing tariff outside temporary welcome offers and outside conditional reductions tied to salary domiciliation, so that the series remains comparable from one survey to the next.

How often is the survey updated?

Bank tariffs move less often than energy or telecom prices, so this survey is conducted on a yearly rhythm. The exact date appears beneath the table, and banks must notify customers of tariff changes in advance.

Can I reuse these figures?

Yes, under an open licence, citing Switchr.be as the source and stating the survey date. The series is archived so that the evolution of Belgian account pricing can be followed rather than read at a single point.
