Mobile plans in Belgium: SIM-only comparison

Updated on 42 plans compared11 providers
In short

SIM-only mobile plans in Belgium run from about €4 to €25 a month. Three physical networks carry every call and every megabyte in the country: Proximus, Orange and Telenet. Every other name you see is a secondary brand or a virtual operator riding one of those three, so coverage follows the host network, not the logo on the SIM card.

Our verdict

As of August 31, 2026, the question that decides whether a cheap Belgian plan works for you is which of the three networks it runs on, not who bills you. A virtual operator on a network with good coverage where you live and commute is a better purchase than a well-known brand on a network that is weak in your area. Test coverage first, compare price second.

Three networks, many brands

Belgium has three mobile network operators that own radio infrastructure: Proximus, Orange and Telenet. Everyone else buys wholesale access and resells it under their own name, sometimes as a discount brand belonging to one of the three, sometimes as an independent virtual operator.

That structure has one practical consequence worth more than any tariff comparison: two plans at very different prices can deliver exactly the same signal in your street, because they use the same masts. Conversely, a cheap plan on a network that is weak where you live will disappoint you regardless of the allowance.

Some Belgian plans state the host network in their specification. Where they do not, ask before subscribing, and check coverage at your home address, your workplace and along your commute rather than nationally.

Reading a Belgian mobile allowance

Belgian plans are described with three figures: data in gigabytes, calling minutes, and text messages. The cheapest tiers give a small data bundle with limited minutes; from the middle of the range upwards, calls and texts are typically unlimited while data stays a bundle.

The word unlimited in Belgian mobile advertising usually attaches to calls and texts. Genuinely uncapped data exists but is rarer and priced accordingly, so read which of the three lines the word is attached to.

Within the European Union your Belgian bundle travels with you under roam-like-at-home rules, subject to fair-use limits set out in the contract. Outside the EU nothing is included by default, and this is where Belgian bills surprise newcomers most often.

Switching and keeping your number

Number portability is a free legal right in Belgium. The incoming operator handles the transfer, and you must not cancel the old contract yourself first: a cancellation issued before the port releases the number permanently.

Where your mobile is part of a bundle with internet or television, the Easy Switch procedure lets the new operator cancel the old contract and coordinate the changeover for you.

BIPT, the Belgian telecoms regulator, publishes the official register of operators and points consumers to an independent ombudsman service for disputes an operator has not resolved. Both are useful references when you are dealing with an unfamiliar brand in a language you are still learning.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a mobile plan cost in Belgium?

SIM-only plans start around €4 to €9 a month for a small data bundle and limited calling, sit between €10 and €15 for a mid-sized bundle with unlimited calls and texts, and reach about €25 for the largest consumer allowances. Handset instalments, where you take one, are billed on top of these figures.

Which network has the best coverage in Belgium?

There is no single answer, because coverage varies by area, and each of the three networks is stronger in some places than others. BIPT publishes measurement information on network quality. The practical test is to check the specific addresses where you will actually use the phone rather than a national map.

Can I get a Belgian SIM before I have a national number?

Prepaid SIM cards are the usual route on arrival, since registration requirements are lighter than for a subscription. Postpaid contracts normally require identification, a Belgian address and often a Belgian bank account for direct debit. Many newcomers start prepaid and move to a subscription once the paperwork is done.

Do I keep my number if I change operator?

Yes, and it is free. The incoming operator runs the porting procedure using your existing number and contract details. The one rule that matters is never to terminate the old contract yourself beforehand, because the number is released the moment the old contract ends and cannot be recovered.

Does my Belgian plan work in other EU countries?

Yes. Under European roam-like-at-home rules your Belgian allowance is usable across the EU at no surcharge, within the fair-use limits written into your contract. Outside the EU, nothing is included unless you buy a travel option, and standard rates there are high enough to produce memorable bills.
