Pay-per-kilometre car insurance in Belgium

In short

Pay-per-kilometre cover charges a reduced base premium plus an amount proportional to the distance actually driven. Several Belgian insurers offer it, with either a declared odometer reading or automatic collection. It is aimed at drivers whose annual mileage sits well below average, and it exists on omnium formulas as well as third-party.

Our verdict

The formula wins below an annual mileage that the insurer states in the contract, typically somewhere between a few thousand and around ten thousand kilometres. Above that, a conventional policy is cheaper again. The profile it genuinely suits is the city dweller with a second or occasional car, not the daily commuter who merely feels they drive little.

How the distance is measured

Two systems coexist. Declared readings ask you to report the odometer periodically, sometimes with a photograph, followed by a settlement at the end of the period. Automatic collection uses a device or a phone application that transmits the data itself.

The second raises a privacy question each driver has to settle for themselves: the data transmitted can be richer than a distance total, and may include times, locations or driving behaviour. Read the data processing notice before subscribing, not after.

Either way, under-reporting is a false declaration with the usual consequences after a claim. A settlement at the end of the period is the norm, so a deliberate under-estimate simply defers the bill rather than avoiding it.

Working out whether it pays for you

Establish your real mileage over the last twelve months. The difference between two roadworthiness test readings or two service invoices gives a reliable base, and most drivers discover they cover less distance than they assumed — or considerably more.

Then ask the same insurer for a quote under both formulas, on identical cover. That is the only comparison that isolates the effect of mileage pricing rather than mixing it with differences in guarantees.

Check what happens above the included allowance. Some contracts bill the excess per kilometre; others switch you to a conventional tariff for the rest of the period. That clause determines what an unusual year costs — a house move, a long holiday drive, a temporary change of workplace.

Finally, remember the base premium still reflects your bonus-malus, your age and your postcode. Mileage pricing modulates the tariff; it does not replace the underlying risk assessment.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I exceed the mileage I declared?

Depending on the contract you either pay a supplement per kilometre at the settlement, or you switch to conventional pricing for the remainder of the period. The clause sits in the particular conditions and deserves a careful read before subscribing, because the two outcomes cost very different amounts.

Does the device monitor how I drive?

It depends on the system. Some record distance only; others also capture driving parameters or location. The purposes of the processing must be described in the insurer's privacy notice, which you can ask for before subscribing rather than discovering afterwards in the app settings.

Does pay-per-kilometre exist with omnium cover?

Yes, several Belgian insurers apply mileage pricing to formulas that include omnium. The mechanism then applies to the whole premium, with the same guarantees, franchise rules and depreciation clauses as a conventional omnium from the same insurer.

Can I go back to a conventional policy?

Yes, normally at the annual renewal, like any change of formula. If your situation changes during the year — a new job, a move, a second vehicle sold — ask your insurer about switching early, since many will accommodate a material change of circumstances.
