The comparison that actually works

Start from your annual consumption in kilowatt-hours, which appears on your yearly settlement invoice. An estimate based on household size is too imprecise to decide on, because heating type changes the figure by a multiple.

Enter that figure and your postcode into an official simulator: the federal one from CREG, or your regional regulator's. The tool adds network tariffs and taxes for your municipality and returns a full annual amount per contract, which is the only number that can be compared.

Compare annual totals, never rates per kilowatt-hour. A supplier can advertise an attractive energy rate and land higher once its fixed annual fee and indexation formula are applied to your volume.

Welcome discounts and the renewal trap

Belgian energy offers frequently carry a first-year discount, an online-management rebate or a dual-fuel reduction. These are real but temporary, and the simulators generally show the amount over the first year, which is where the advantage sits.

At the end of a fixed-term contract, the supplier proposes a renewal. Tacit renewal commonly lands you on the current tariff rather than a new-customer tariff, and that gap is where most households quietly lose money.

Because a residential customer can leave with one month's notice and no penalty, there is no structural reason to accept a renewal you have not compared. Put a reminder in your calendar a month before your contract anniversary and rerun the simulator with the same consumption figure.

One caution: chasing the lowest annual total every year suits a household that can absorb variation. If your budget cannot, the arbitration between a fixed and a variable price matters more than the last few euros.
