Online banks in Belgium

In short

Two very different things are sold under the same word in Belgium. Belgian online banks are credit institutions under Belgian law, with a Belgian IBAN and the Belgian deposit guarantee. European neobanks operate here from another member state under the EU passport, with a foreign IBAN and their home country's guarantee scheme. The difference shows up in practice, not in the app.

Our verdict

A European neobank is excellent for payments and travel in other currencies and does not replace a Belgian account if you want a mortgage, or if your payroll department insists on a national IBAN. The arrangement most residents settle on is both accounts side by side, each doing what it is good at.

Belgian IBAN or foreign IBAN: why it still matters

European rules prohibit refusing an IBAN from another member state for a direct debit or a euro transfer. In practice, refusals persist at some Belgian bodies and employers, through system constraints rather than bad faith.

Belgian public administrations, mutualities and social bodies work more smoothly with a Belgian IBAN, if only because reimbursements are routed faster and queries are easier to resolve.

If you are settled in Belgium for the long term, holding a Belgian account removes that friction entirely. A European account alongside it stays useful for currency operations, and there is no rule against having both.

Which deposit guarantee scheme applies

For a bank incorporated under Belgian law, the Belgian deposit guarantee scheme protects your balance up to the European ceiling, per depositor and per institution.

For a neobank operating from another member state, the scheme of the home country applies. The ceiling is harmonised across the Union, but the responsible body, the language of the procedure and the compensation route are those of that country.

One point deserves care: some financial services are provided by payment or electronic money institutions rather than banks. Those are not covered by a deposit guarantee at all but by a fund-safeguarding regime. Check the exact status of the institution before you leave a significant balance sitting there.

Frequently asked questions

Can a neobank replace my Belgian bank?

For everyday payments and travel, yes. For a mortgage, a Belgian consumer loan or some administrative formalities, no: those products assume a relationship with an institution established on the Belgian market and lending against Belgian assets.

Can my salary be paid to a foreign IBAN?

In law, yes: European rules forbid discriminating on the country of the IBAN for euro payments. In practice, some employers and payroll systems still refuse. Ask your HR department before you make a foreign account your main one, because a rejected salary payment takes weeks to unwind.

Are Belgian online banks less safe than branch banks?

No. A Belgian online bank is subject to the same prudential framework, the same supervision and the same deposit guarantee as a bank with a branch network. The absence of branches changes the service model, not the level of protection attached to your deposits.

Can I hold several accounts in Belgium?

Yes, with no legal limit. Combining a local account for domestic life with a digital one for international spending is common practice. Each institution carries its own deposit guarantee ceiling, so splitting balances across two institutions also increases the covered amount.
