Student bank accounts in Belgium

In short

Belgian banks offer youth tiers that are free by age rather than by condition, generally up to a cut-off in the mid-twenties. A student living in Belgium needs a Belgian IBAN for three things in particular: pay from a student contract, the study allowance paid by the relevant Community, and reimbursements from a mutuality.

Our verdict

Choose on the age at which the free tier ends and on what happens the day after, because that is when the account silently reverts to the standard tariff. A second criterion matters more than students expect: whether the bank will let you open the account and receive a card before your commune registration is finalised, which decides whether your first student pay arrives on time.

Free by age, not by condition

Youth tiers work differently from adult free accounts. Where an adult exemption depends on online-only use or on salary being paid in, a youth tier is granted on the basis of date of birth and requires nothing else.

The consequence is a cliff edge. On the birthday that ends the tier, the standard schedule applies, usually without a targeted warning. Diarise that date and compare accounts a month before it, not a year after.

Below eighteen, an account is opened with parental authorisation and comes without an overdraft facility. Card ceilings are lower and are set jointly with the legal representative, which is worth knowing before a first trip abroad.

What the account is actually needed for in Belgium

Student work is paid by transfer against a student contract. Employers ask for the account number before the first payslip, and a missing IBAN is a common reason for a first payment slipping by a month.

The study allowance is paid by the Community responsible for your education — the French Community or the Flemish Community depending on where you study — and is credited to an account in the student's own name. Conditions and amounts are set by that Community, so check them with it rather than with your bank.

Kot rent is normally paid by standing order, and the rental guarantee for a student room goes into a blocked account in your name, released only by joint agreement or a court decision. Ask whether your bank opens that blocked account free of charge, because some bill it.

Mutuality reimbursements for medical costs are paid to your account. Registering with a mutuality and giving it your IBAN is one of the first things to do after enrolling.

Frequently asked questions

Until what age is a student account free in Belgium?

It depends on the bank; the cut-off usually sits somewhere in the mid-twenties and can be tied to proof of enrolment rather than age alone. Check the exact wording in the tariff schedule, because the day the tier ends the standard fee applies automatically and is rarely flagged in advance.

Can a minor open an account alone in Belgium?

No. Below eighteen, the account is opened with the agreement of the legal representative, who co-signs and sets the card limits. There is no overdraft facility. From eighteen the account converts to a full adult account, generally keeping the youth tariff until the age cut-off.

Do I need a Belgian account for a student job?

In practice yes. Belgian employers pay by transfer and their payroll systems are set up for national IBANs. European rules forbid refusing an IBAN from another member state for a euro payment, but arguing that point with a payroll department before your first pay run rarely ends well.

Can an international student keep a home-country account?

Yes, and many do for family transfers. It works badly for Belgian daily life: mutuality reimbursements, study allowance and a kot rental guarantee all assume a Belgian account. The usual arrangement is to keep the home account open and add a Belgian one once you are registered at your commune.
