Bancontact
Bancontact is the domestic Belgian debit card and payment scheme, present on most cards issued by Belgian banks and accepted almost everywhere in the country. Many merchants accept Bancontact but not international credit cards, which is why a foreign card alone can be inconvenient in daily life here.
What it means in daily life
Belgian debit cards commonly carry both the domestic scheme and an international one, so they work abroad as well. The reverse is not true: a card issued outside Belgium does not carry the domestic scheme.
Practically, that shows up in small shops, bakeries, market stalls, some medical practices and parts of the public sector, where card acceptance is domestic only. Newcomers relying on a foreign card meet this in the first week.
The associated payment app is also widely used for transfers between individuals and for paying by scanning a code on an invoice, which is common on Belgian bills. Both uses require a Belgian account.
Frequently asked questions
Can I pay everywhere in Belgium with a foreign card?
Not everywhere. Many small merchants and some public services accept only the domestic Belgian scheme, so a foreign credit or debit card can be refused in ordinary situations. A Belgian account solves the problem permanently.
Is Bancontact the same as my bank's card?
It is the scheme carried by the card rather than the card itself. Belgian banks issue debit cards carrying the domestic scheme, usually combined with an international one so that the card also works outside the country.
